The B-Side is a lively jazz event featuring big name artists alongside Leeds Conservatoire staff and students. This week’s special guest is duo John Pope and John Garner.
The duo’s highly interactive and spontaneously explored music celebrates composers less frequently foregrounded in the contemporary jazz canon like Ornette Coleman, Misha Mengelberg, Alice Coltrane, Anthony Braxton and Carla Bley. The unusual line-up of violin and double bass gives a unique sound and demonstrates the adaptability of these compositions and this music in general, channelled through the lens of the duo’s ecstatic improvisational aesthetic and their experience in myriad musical traditions.
